How Avaya's Financial Troubles and Minimum Seat Requirement Impacts SMB Contact Centers

Avaya building logo

What will Avaya's impact on SMB contact centers be? Well, recently Avaya announced significant changes that will have a huge impact on small and medium-sized businesses (SMBs). Starting June 30, 2025, Avaya will enforce a minimum requirement of 200 seats for its Avaya Experience Platform (AXP) Public cloud services. This means that contact centers with fewer than 200 seats will no longer be supported under this platform.

This strategic shift is part of Avaya's broader focus on larger enterprises. SMBs currently utilizing AXP Public have two options:

  1. Scale Up: Increase their subscription to meet the 200-seat minimum.

  2. Terminate Subscription: Opt out by providing written notice to Avaya before June 30, 2025.

Additionally, Avaya is discontinuing its SIP Trunking and Communications APIs (CPaaS) cloud services, with sales ending on April 28, 2025. CXToday

These decisions follow Avaya's recent financial restructuring efforts aimed at reducing debt and focusing on high-value customers. While this move may streamline Avaya's operations, it poses challenges for SMBs that rely on their services. SMBs should consider exploring alternative communication solutions to ensure uninterrupted service.

For instance, companies like Sangoma, RingCentral, Dialpad, and Vonage are positioning themselves as viable alternatives, offering flexible and scalable communication solutions tailored for SMBs.

So, What Are Your Options?

You’ve got two choices if you’re currently on AXP Public:

  1. Scale up to hit the 200-seat minimum (which might not be realistic or cost-effective).

  2. Walk away — but you’ll need to send written notice to Avaya before June 30, 2025.

Either way, a decision has to be made. And fast.
